The Retina display itself is also unchanged, offering admirable clarity and brightness with 2, by 1, resolution dpi and support for the DCI-P3 colour-space used for professional video-editing although there are rumours of a inch model planned for later this year.
Four generations and counting
The 'butterfly' keyboard is still there as well — although it now seems that, at long last, Apple has recognised the error of its ways with this design and may be reverting to a more traditional 'scissor' mechanism for future keyboards. So this update is, essentially, a 'speed-bump' -- albeit, a fairly significant speed-bump that introduces a new top-of-the-range 8-core CPU and enhanced graphics performance, as Apple continues to woo professional users, who have felt rather neglected in recent years.
This entry-level model offers only a modest speed-bump, though, with a 9th generation, 6-core Core i7 processor running at 2. Customers in the UK can at least console themselves that this second model offers a more substantial upgrade: a 9th generation 8-core Core i9 processor running at 2. Both of these standard configurations can be further upgraded with an 8-core Core i9 processor running at 2. Our review unit included both the 2. These prices are significantly lower than last year's comparable top-of-the-range customisation options, and it often seems as though Apple's most expensive products actually offer the best value for money, while their so-called 'entry-level' models can often seem overpriced.
The price rises for UK customers will be disappointing, but the performance of the updated inch MacBook Pro should satisfy even demanding professional users. Admittedly, the step up from 6- to 8-cores doesn't make a major difference to raw processor performance, with single-core performance in Geekbench 4 only rising modestly from 5, to 5, compared to last year's model.
Multi-core performance shows a larger increase, though, rising from 24, to 30, -- and, of course, the 8-core processor will excel with demanding tasks such as editing multiple streams of video. The more demanding Unigine Valley graphics test produces a score of We've seen stronger graphics performance from similarly priced desktop systems -- including a Valley score of So if you're looking for a lightweight laptop that can provide heavyweight graphics performance, then the new MacBook Pro is a tempting proposition for professional users.
The new model also features the ability to activate Siri with vocal commands, but this is a bit of a pointless feature, as desktop-based voice assistants really aren't all that useful. We're used to Apple's notebooks being impressive, but the new MacBook Pro is nothing short of a work of art. It may not be quite as thin and light as some of its competition, but it makes up for it by being the most powerful 13in laptop around.
It's not quite as awe-inspiring as its GPU-equipped 15in sibling, but it'll still chew through everything short of serious enterprise-grade rendering workloads. On top of that, it's still an absolutely lovely-looking machine. There's a very good reason that the MacBook Pro has become the archetypal image of 'the laptop', and that's because it's absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, there's very little to dislike about the 13in MacBook Pro.
Sure, it's expensive, and some of the features are pointless we're looking at you, Siri , but the simple fact is that it's supplanted the XPS 13 as the best do-it-all laptop on the market.
